The Vector Institute, in partnership with Unity Health Toronto, is seeking a Scientific Systems Administrator, GEMINI to join our team in Toronto.  This role will predominantly work with the General Medicine Inpatient Initiative (GEMINI) team at St. Michael’s Hospital, in addition to providing support to the Vector community.

Providing guidance on GEMINI’s IT needs, the Scientific Systems Administrator, GEMINI will be responsible for managing local and high performance computing (HPC) cloud systems operations as well as provide support of regulatory approvals and data access requests.

Located in the MaRS Discovery District in downtown Toronto, we are part of a dynamic and vibrant community of research, academia, health science and commerce. 


Co-led by Drs. Fahad Razak and Amol Verma, GEMINI has developed methods to extract and standardize data from electronic health records to harness the tremendous potential of data generated through routine patient care of General Internal Medicine hospital inpatients for research and quality improvement purposes. GEMINI is a unique data platform in the Canadian healthcare landscape and currently exists at 7 hospitals, with data collected on 240,000+ patient visits, including 1 billion+ data points. The GEMINI data platform supports research efforts that encompass over 30 projects, involving clinicians, computer and data scientists, and over 40 affiliate scientists and students.


  • Manage, configure and maintain all systems operations including permissions, workload, security, backup schedules, and transaction logs on local and cloud-based systems;
  • Perform software system upgrades, monitor systems and troubleshoot as needed;
  • Support Linux-based scientific workstations servers, and storage for research environments;
  • Provide data regulatory approval support and data access requests;
  • Guide and support clinicians and researchers from different hospitals, health institutions and the Vector Institute in Ontario in all their computing needs; and
  • Document processes and procedures, when required. 


  • GEMINI’s systems function smoothly.
  • Tools are built and maintained that facilitate the automated or direct administration of network and computing infrastructure, both locally and on the HPC cloud system.
  • Researchers feel supported in their computing needs and receive timely approval and access to data.


  • Degree or diploma in computer science or engineering or more than 5 years systems administration in a UNIX/Linux environment supporting multiple users or complex computing environment preferably in a multi-user research environment
  • Excellent understanding of protocols (i.e. NFS, CIFS, LDAP, DHCP, DNS and NTP)
  • Proven programming/scripting skills as it pertains to systems administration (i.e. Bash, Perl, Python)
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and leading system-wide IT projects or upgrades involving multiple intra and inter-institutional stakeholders; direct project management experience or PMP is an asset
  • Experience installing, configuring and troubleshooting environments using mostly open-source software
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, prioritize tasks and resolve problems in a timely manner
  • Demonstrated ability to explain complex concepts in simple terms required
  • Ability to work autonomously, multi-task and work in a fast-paced and stressful environment and handle situations involving unplanned outages required
  • Strong attention to detail, proactive, addressing potential problems before they occur
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • High level of initiative and self-direction required
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, organization, conceptual and decision-making skills with the ability to work within a team environment
