The Vector Institute, in partnership with Unity Health Toronto, is seeking a Data Architect, GEMINI to join our team in Toronto.  This role will predominantly work with the General Medicine Inpatient Initiative (GEMINI) team at St. Michael’s Hospital, in addition to providing support to the Vector community.

The Data Architect, GEMINI will develop, implement, and maintain the data warehouse to house GEMINI’s administrative and clinical data. This role will provide oversight of the data assets, maintain the data model including definitions and processes following GEMINI’s existing needs and establish a robust, sustainable and scalable data warehouse.

Co-led by Drs. Fahad Razak and Amol Verma, GEMINI has developed methods to extract and standardize data from electronic health records to harness the tremendous potential of data generated through routine patient care of General Internal Medicine hospital inpatients for research and quality improvement purposes. GEMINI is a unique data platform in the Canadian healthcare landscape and currently exists at 7 hospitals, with data collected on 240,000+ patient visits, including 1 billion+ data points. The GEMINI data platform supports research efforts that encompass over 30 projects, involving clinicians, computer and data scientists, and over 40 affiliate scientists and students.


  • Engages with GEMINI’s leadership to understand functional and operational requirements of the data warehouse;
  • Provide guidance and validate requirements with GEMINI’s leadership to ensure alignment with strategic priorities;
  • Develop detailed plans for modeling, transforming and delivering data following GEMINI’s needs and specifications;
  • Develop and perform testing activities to ensure consistency and integrity of data from design to execution of the data warehouse;
  • Evaluate and maintain optimal system performance, modifying and updating as required to meet growing demands; and
  • Perform other functions as required (e.g., providing scientific advice and support to Vector’s technical teams). 


  • GEMINI’s leadership are engaged throughout all phases of project.
  • GEMINI’s existing data models are smoothly transitioned to a new platform that maintains data integrity.
  • GEMINI has a fully operational, robust, sustainable and scalable data warehouse that meets all requirements. 


  • Master’s degree in computer engineering, computer science, or equivalent experience; PhD is an asset
  • More than 5 years of years of database modeling, development and implementation experience; documented training is preferred
  • Healthcare experience preferred
  • In-depth knowledge and experience leading and implementing big data platforms and integrating multiple data sources; PMP is an asset
  • Familiarity with data governance models, data cleaning, and maintenance practices
  • Demonstrated experience working with the Unified Data Model for Healthcare
  • Demonstrated experience creating datasets for analysis
  • Data mining/machine learning experience an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, ability to prioritize tasks and resolve problems in a timely manner
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team, multi-task and work in a demanding, fast-paced environment
  • Be proactive, addressing potential problems before they occur
  • Strong analytic and problem solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
